Homburg, Germany - Final Post

“Let us run the race that is before us and never give up”

Coleman stabilized through the night and Belinda stayed with him as much as possible until around 3 AM. I went in about 6:20 AM, told him we love him and how proud we are of him. While I was standing there stroking his hair, his heart stopped. The doctors asked about reviving him and proceeded to make all efforts, none of which succeeded. I was never more than a few feet from him the while.

A little over a year ago a 17 year old boy sat across from me after saying goodbye to a friend, PFC Cody Carver and said “Dad, he did something” and asked if I would go with him to the recruiter the next day. Some might say that the Army gave me back a man – but I dare say I was looking at one that day. Coleman enlisted, turned down all of his “bonus” money, in exchange for a front row seat in a faraway place as an infantryman. Along the way, no amount of boot camp or hardship could restrain that quality that attracted so many to Coleman since he was an infant – pure, unadulterated joy.

A retired Army Ranger we know called when he heard the news about Coleman several days ago and said “listen to me – don’t ask “why” but ask “what” – what is God showing you in this?”. I would ask the same of each of you who have prayed and supported Coleman, Jordan, and our family. Coleman has forced a multitude to re-evaluate their relationships – with their family, their friends, and with God. But that was Coleman – he had a joy that attracted and changed and challenged people wherever he went. His suffering has done the same.

Coleman had no regrets about the decisions he made – he said so in so many words. He was open and expressive about his true feelings – he spoke his soul – a trait few men master. When Coleman loved you, you knew that you were loved.

Coleman was absolutely certain of his eternal destiny - which gave him true courage in life. We rest knowing that Coleman is now “face to face” with his Savior.

In the end, few men do anything that really matters - and fewer still finish well.

I know a man who managed both.

Goodbye, my precious son.

Father thank you for every second we were allowed to spend with you’re precious gift to us, Coleman. Now Lord, welcome a son, a friend and a soldier into Your loving arms. Comfort the love of his life, Jordan, his mother, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends and the many hundreds he touched.

In the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

  1. How we love you Hinkefents. Coleman was a gift to us all. This old Twila Paris song comes to mind:

    A visitor from Heaven
    If only for a while
A gift of love to be returned
We think of you and smile

    A visitor from Heaven
    Accompanied by grace
    Reminding of a better Love
    And of a better place

With aching hearts and empty arms
We send you with a name
It hurts so much to let you go
But we’re so glad you came
    We’re so glad you came

    A visitor from Heaven
    If only for a day
We thank Him for the time He gave
And now it’s time to say
We trust you to the Father’s Love
    And to His tender care
    Held in the everlasting arms
And we’re so glad you’re there
    We’re so glad you’re there

With breaking hearts and open hands
We send you with a name
It hurts so much to let you go
But we’re so glad you came
    We’re so glad you came

Thank you, God, for Coleman's life and impact. Come quickly for the rest of us.

  2. Eric, Thank you for your beautiful words. Thank you for bringing such an amazing boy into the world and raising him to be the man that he is. This experience HAS changed my life and how I view God and how I view prayer, and I will forever be grateful to Coleman for that; but someday (and may it be soon, Lord)I will tell him so face to face. Until then, the absence leaves a painful hole that I don't think can ever be filled. Lord, how do we learn to focus on the beauty of his life, and not just the pain of his loss? Please show us the way. Please send your love and comfort and peace to the family.

  3. Eric, Belinda, Emil, Heather, Erica, Haley, and Jordan, I so regret the pain in your lives on this day. I weep with you over your loss, the loss of so many others, and our loss, and because I know you and Coleman I can confidently say I also rejoice with you also because Coleman is face to face with his Heavenly Father. Coleman's walk on this earth has given way to his present walk with His God and our God, His Savior and our Savior. While Coleman is nolonger present with us, I rejoice with you that he remains alive -- alive not in a final "resting place" but in the presence the loving Father who called him to spiritual life as His child and now has called him eternal home. What a thought that our Lord Jesus, seated at the right hand of the Father, stood and welcomed Coleman into heaven with a "well done, My servant."

Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jessu from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make us complete in every good work to do His will, working in us what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Chrsit, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen (Heb 13:20-21.

  11. Eric & Belinda i can't fathom the depth of your hurt, loss, and exhaustion. Neither can i assume to have the right words to say to help bear your burden, but these verses have been coming to mind while praying for you and Coleman. Thought it might be good to share them with you.
    Psalm 107
23 ¶ Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters,
24 They see the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep.
25 For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea.
26 They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble.
27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cry out to the LORD in their trouble, And He brings them out of their distresses.
29 He calms the storm, So that its waves are still.
30 Then they are glad because they are quiet; So He guides them to their desired haven.
31 Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
32 Let them exalt Him also in the assembly of the people, And praise Him in the company of the elders.

  12. I cannot blame God for taking Coleman home. Indeed, He has heard our cries and has healed Coleman and made him whole forever. But my heart aches at the loss and the grief my family will share. Thank you to all who stood by Coleman's side to the very end. We will miss you, Coleman. Eric and Belinda, we are ready for you to come home.

  13. Fish,
I'm devastated. Quite simply. I am in disbelief and so terribly saddened by all of this.
What I would do for one last chance to see your constant, smiling face. To see you walk past, smile and wave. To stand in front of the building, joke and laugh with you.
You are loved. You are missed. You are still with us.
    Yours,
    Andrew

"If a person brings so much courage into the world that the world must kill him to break him, so of course it kills him. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those it cannot break it will kill. It kills the very good, the very gentle, and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these things the world will kill you too but there will be no special hurry."

  14. I knew Coleman only in passing however I watched him grow from a young boy to a man over the years. I always got a laugh when they would stop by the store after school. Coleman always had a grin on his face and a snappy comment even for a young child. Of course his older brother was always right there with him being the prototypical big brother suggesting what "treat" his little brother should get. Even a short time before he left for boot camp I got to eat lunch with Coleman and others and he still had the same smile on his face.

    He will definitely be missed.

    Rest in peace Coleman.

Please know that our prayers continue for you and your family. Coleman's journey is over, but he is (and has been throughout all of this) in loving arms of our God and Father.

Coleman's last journey has been the focus of so many prayers and has affected so many lives, including our church, Foothills Community Church in Spokane, WA.

May you continue to rest in the arms of God of all comfort (II Cor 1) as well as the prayers and acts of friendship of those around you.

Words cannot express my sympathy for all left behind. Coleman truly changed the lives of everyone he came in contact with. He will be deeply missed. May the God of all peace, comfort you; may you feel his presence in a very special way. We love you and pray that God will give you the strength you need.

Father, we come to you today with broken hearts, not pretending to be strong. There are so many things in this life we do not understand. We do understand that you are God, and that your ways exceed ours. We know you have a long range forecast, that we cannot fathom this side of eternity. Father thank you for every moment that I was privileged to spend with Coleman here on this earth, for the times spent in Sunday school and social events. Thank you for the “Coleman hugs” and the mischievous smile we all enjoyed. Father please comfort all of us, especially Coleman’s family. Let us express our grief, so that you can heal us. Let us weep, so that you can dry our tears. Lord, we love you, we trust you. We look forward to the time when we will all be together with you forever in a place where words like leukemia, cancer and organ failure are unnecessary. May we trust you, and learn to love you more through all of this. In Christ name we pray, Amen.

  23. Dear Eric, Belinda and family: There are no words to express our sorrow and compassion toward you guys over this loss. Our love and prayers are with you as you make this difficult adjustment. The good news is indeed the good news, that since he is absent from the body he is home with the Lord. That we know and in that we find peace. As you know all Believers are in His hands and sometimes it is more evident than others and while we indeed weep it is not like those who have no hope. 30. As I awakened this morning, my first thought was "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints". That was even before I heard the news that Coleman was face to face with His Lord.
Jesus said, "My house shall be called a house of prayer". We thank you, Father, for uniting so many together in prayer as we have asked so many things on behalf of Coleman and his family. We thank you, Father, for the clarity of Your Word which has been proclaimed through out the nations through Coleman's life, illness and death. "So shall My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me empty without accomplishing what I desire and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it" Isaiah 55:11.
Thank you, Father, for allowing us the privilege of participating in this time with those we love and those we have yet to meet. We rejoice with Coleman in the new life which we know he is enjoying now and eagerly await the opportunity to join him. What a pleasure it will be to see the many crowns of glory that Coleman and his parents and family will have to lay at the feet of Jesus!

Please be with Eric and Belinda, Jordan, Emil and Heather, as they face the dark days ahead. Please help us to come alongside them and extend Your love from our hearts. Please be with us all, and if we cannot understand this side of heaven, help us to accept.

    In Your Precious Son's name,

Our hearts are crushed, but we know that you will not abandon us.

  48. Eric & Belinda-

I am so sorry for your loss. From all I read, Coleman must have been an extraordinary young man and I'm grieving with you.

Our son Noah is in Erica's class and we have been praying for you all. At dinner, several nights ago, I first told Noah about the situation. He interrupted me and I was about to correct him when he blurted out, "Dad, let's pray." I got tears in my eyes as he prayed for Coleman, Erica and your family in such a simple, profound and heartfelt way.

I can't imagine what you're going through. And even though we have a sure hope and can mourn differently than those without faith, this is still an inconceivably terrible circumstance. There are no easy answers.

In the midst of it all, may God draw you closer together and nearer to Himself. We will continue to pray to that end.

  54. Father,

My heart is absolutely broken for Eric, Belinda, Emil, Heather, Erica, Haley and for Jordan. Words cannot describe the sorrow and loss they feel. We know you have a plan and while we fail to understand it, we trust that you are right, of course.

I pray that you pour comfort over each one of these precious people every moment of every day. Father, when they forget and feel crushed by their pain, remind them that you needed Coleman with you and you have him secure in your arms, having welcomed him to his true and eternal home. We are confident, as believers in your Son, that we will see him again.

Father, our time is like a vapor compared to yours. Remind them that the time they will have on this earth to miss him will look minute when they realize the eternity they will spend with him in our true home.

Like Coleman, we are sojourners in a foreign land. We are meant for a better and higher place. Coleman just won the prize of getting there before we do. There are so many who have gone before us and they are waiting patiently for us to join them.

I pray that not a single person who has read this blog and prayed for only the first or second time is discouraged. Make them know that even though the prayer they offered was not answered as they expected, it was still cherished. God, you did not make a mistake here. Take these hearts who may have opened themselves to you for the first time and make them know you. Please don't let them waste the ministry that Coleman had because they are sad that he is in Heaven.

Father, give them the conviction to know and understand that they are a sinner who desperately needs salvation. That you sent your only Son to live on earth, completely and utterly sinless despite temptation. That he made the decision, thinking of them individually, to die on the cross and pay the penalty for their sins. That he rose again three days later and now sits at your right hand waiting for them to accept him.

Make them know that he loves them and desires nothing more than to save them. Make them know that he takes them where they are, no matter how perfect or miserable they may think they have become.

Father, I pray that you encourage each person on this blog to take the lessons you have taught us and make them permanent in our lives. May we continue to pray without ceasing. May we trust you in all things. May we love as you love.

Father, I cry out to you for Belinda and Eric. I cannot fathom their hurt. I know they trust in you and do not question your judgment. I know they know that their son is with you. But Father, I know that their spirits are crushed. Give them the strength to make their journey home to us. Encourage them and comfort them along each step. Give them time to grieve and hold their hearts in your hands so that they do not feel overwhelmed. Cherish and love them as only you can.

My heart breaks for Emil who has stood so strong in you. Father, show him your love. Make him feel your presence. Give him peace in this situation and give him comfort while he grieves.

Father, Jordan needs you right now like no other time in her life. Protect her heart and give her reason to trust you. Give her some level of understanding and make sure she knows that she can lean on this family of believers while she mourns. Father, bring someone alongside her who has experienced the same pain who can comfort her in ways few else can.

I pray for Erica and Haley that you guard their hearts as they hear this news. Do not break their sweet little spirits.

Father, we trust you and we thank you that we had an opportunity to know this young man you have called home. We thank you that we have been blessed to be on this journey with him and the Hinkefent family. We have been utterly changed.

In your Son's holy and precious name,
    Amen.

  57. Dear Hinkefent family and Jordan,

Late last night, which must have been around the time Coleman left to be with the Lord, this verse kept coming to mind:

According to my earnest expectation and my hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

Truly, Christ has been honored in Coleman's life and in his death! As others have noted, we grieve, but not as those who have no hope. We can say confidently that the Lord has fulfilled his purposes for Coleman. And for now, we take some comfort in that.

Yet, our hearts ache and we weep for your loss, your pain. We are sad that this courageous young son who brought so much joy and light to your lives is no longer here with us. Please know that our prayers surround you for the Holy Spirit to embrace you with comfort and peace. Annabelle is praying for your sweet Erica. Much love, The Clark Family, Tulsa

  58. Hinkefent family,
We weep with you and rejoice with you. Our Lord has given Coleman perfect healing for his very ill and tired body.

May the Lord give you strength, comfort and direction during these times of preparation that will begin your walk of healing.

The 23rd Psalm reveals the many ways God shows His loving kindness and protective power as we walk in our daily path. He is the Good Shepherd.

    Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside the still waters,
    He restores my soul.

He guides me in paths of righteousness, for His name's sake.

Even though, I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will feel no evil, for you are with me.

Your rod and Your staff comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You annoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.

Surely, goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen

May God bless all of you and help you to rest your tired mind, body and give you strength.

    Praying for all of you,
    John and Eva

  61. Eric, Belinda and Family - Our hearts are broken and we grieve with you, but as others have said, we also celebrate the fact that Coleman is at rest now and safe in the arms of His Saviour. I can just see all those that have gone before watching over him and loving on him. So much of what we've been studying keeps coming back to me - it was surely for just such a time as this.
Because we walk with the Lord we don't have to fear the dark. Even in the blackest night, He is there. His presence and grace are our comfort and light. No matter what we are going through, God has treasure for us - the treasure of the deep sense of His presence.
We have all surely experience that presence and closeness through the last week.
God will use you for His pruposes until the day you go to be with Him. This was so evident in Coleman's life - Thank you for sharing this time with us and allowing us to stand alongside you in prayer when we couldn't physically be there to hold you. Coleman finished his race strong - may we all do likewise.
This prayer expresses what my feeble words cannot. Know that we love you all and are ready to have you back home where we can cry together, praise God together and love one another.
Lord, only You can fill that empty place in the canyon of sorrow that has been left in my heart. You are the one constant in my life that can never be lost to me. All else is temporary and changing. I know You are a good God and your love for me is endless. Help me to cast my whole burden of grief on You and let You carry it. Even though there are times when it feels like I can't live through the pain, I know You will sustain me. Enable me to get beyond it. I realize life must go on, and I ask You to help me take the next step I need to take today. Even though it's hard to imagine life without the pain I feel, with You all things are possible. Your healing power can restore anything - even a broken heart. Walk with me, Lord. I trust you to take my hand and lead me until I can feel You light on my face and joy in my heart once again.
Romans 8:18 - For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
God's glory has been revealed to us today.

I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know the words to say or what you are feeling, but I will continue to pray for you guys. I have no idea why the Lord chose to take Coleman when He did and I know I am not supposed to ask why. I guess God needed His own little soldier in heaven. I pray that God comforts the rest of us while we continue our stay here on earth. My heart pours out to you all.

  63. Eric & Belinda,
As a parent I cannnot phantom the depth of your loss, but also as a parent I could never have the enormous faith and courage that you have displayed during Coleman's illness. I have said to many people this week that we as a family feel so honored and so blessed that Coleman entered our lives through Jordan and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
We are so thankful to you and Belinda for keeping Jordan updated on Coleman's condition through out this week, I cannot express my graditute. I have also been so moved by Emil's and Heather's prayers and comments, you must be very proud of them. It is very obvious that you are wonderful parents.

When Coleman asked me for my permission to marry Jordan, I at first showed resistance to their time frame, but this will be no surprise to you, although remaining respectful, my resistance ran off Coleman like a duck shedding water. After many conversations with Jordan, one night I woke up and realized that this young man had captured Jordan's heart and did not intend to return it. Jordan convinced me of her maturity and love for Coleman when she told me that Coleman at first became her best friend and then she realized she wanted to spend her life with Coleman. So therefore, from that moment on I became very supportive.

We pray that God will give you peace and comfort to your entire family, Jordan and Coleman's friends.

  66. I learned of Coleman's battle just last night through an email from Jan Priddy of Precepts. Amazingly, this led me to be in fervent prayer for him and for his family around 11 pm (EST). Although I didn't have the privilege of knowing Coleman here, I now look forward to meeting him as my brother in Jesus Christ one day. Coleman's joy is so apparent through those that love him. If it is any comfort to you at all, I wanted you to know that God raised up at least one "stranger" (...and I'm sure there are many others) who was praying for you in one of the most difficult moments of your life. I will continue to pray for you...especially for Mom, Dad and Jordan. May a peace that passes all understanding continually manifest itself on you, reminding you that precious Coleman is face-to-face with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ....the ultimate joy and "shalom". My heart is full for you. Thank you for sharing Coleman with me.

Coleman is near and dear to our hearts. As an integral part of our youth group family for several years we could always depend on him for a smile and to do what was right. The joy he emitted was always genuine and infectious and it has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of his life. The love he showed for his family is a tribute to you, Eric & Belinda, as parents. Eric your words of Coleman further illustrate the love you all possess in your family. If everyone in this world cared for their children the way you care for yours i dare say many of our problems would lessen, if not dissapear. Pam, Stephanie, Steven, and I will grieve in the loss of your son. But we smile through the tears thinking of that mischevious smile of Coleman's lighting up the face of our Lord and Savior. 73. Coleman may have lost this earthly fight but he has won the greatest eternal battle! He now sits with the Father in peace, his body whole. He will live on in our hearts as we salute a final farewell.

May we not feel as though God gave up or that he didn't answer our prayers, but in fact he called his son, his precious child, home to be with him in perfection.

Hinkefent family, God knows your sorrow, your deep pain as he himself sent his son to die so that your precious Coleman could have eternal life with him. It was an unselfish gift given to all who will believe in Jesus Christ as their saviour. What a precious gift and we're so glad Coleman accepted with honor.
As a mom, your pain is unfathomable. Our prayers will continue to be with you as you join together as a family to lay your dear sweet son to rest. Lean on each other at this time and on our Heavenly Father to give you peace, comfort and strength.

We will miss Coleman and we will mourn with you!
I am grateful for the impact he has had on so many lives and our prayer now is that the unbelieving will come to know Christ b/c of the many sacrifices your son has made. Be encouraged that he is part of God's perfect plan

  74. Mr. and Mrs. Hinkefent I am Jordan's oldest brother. I know her heart is broken. Jordan loved and cared for Coleman a great deal. I appreciate that during this time of struggle that you have kept Jordan informed and involved. Your actions have been soothing for a young lady that is in a great deal of pain.
My youngest son, Michael, has gotten to know Coleman over the last year or so. He has spent some time with him at Jordan's and talked to him a few times via web cam. I can tell you that as with all of us but even more so to an 8 year boy, a young man voluntering to serve his country in these dangerous times is quite impressive. Michael has spoken of Coleman several times and each time it is with awe and admiration. As Michael's parents my wife and I would like to thank you for the example your son has set for ours.
I did not know Coleman well, but I can tell you that he had a tremendous positive effect on many that I hold dear to my heart. For that he will always be held in the highest regard in our family.

Sydney and her family have been in earnest prayer for Coleman--standing and believing for a miracle in the flesh, and although that was not the Lord's will, we do know the enemy has been defeated and the miracle of a reunion in heaven awaits. We grieve for you and with you and are in awe by the way you have communicated your faith. I've held my children more these last few days and have no doubt that Coleman had affected the faith of many and brought souls to Christ. We will continually pray for peace in these coming days, months and years for you all--there is joy in the morning.

  77. I have sat for over 12 hours trying to find any words. My heart wants to speak to Coleman. Coleman, you will always be a fine young man to me. You have people across the nation grieving for you. That in itself should tell you what you mean to people. You have left such an impact on so many lives. Your story has touched thousands. While I sit here & cry, I know that I'm selfish because I want you to still be here with us. However; I now know that you're no longer suffering as you fought for the last week. You are at peace & will watch every one of us who will miss you. Your amazing spirit will be with me daily. I only hope that your story, your personality, your drive will bring people closer together & realize that life is too short. You never know when it will be taken from you. While I am selfish in wanting you be here, I know that you're in a better place & I have faith in knowing that my Mother, Grandmother, Grandfather, and Uncle (All excellent people themselves taken at too early of an age) are there with open arms & they will take care of you & love you just as we would.

I can't imagine the pain that your parents, sibling, and fiance are going through...as the pain that I bear is tremendous in itself. I know that you will constantly be with them in spirit & you will never leave their side. Please show Amanda that you're okay as she is having the most difficult time with this herself. She doesn't understand. I haven't brought myself to tell Pete as of yet. I don't know the words.

In closing, Coleman, you are a very loved young man & have left a tremendous void physically but your memories, your smile, your infectious personality will live in on so many. I will not say goodbye, simply I will see you later.

    Much love & sadness,

Thank you so much for raising such a great young man. He touched so many lives. I've known Coleman for years. We used to have a 9 o'clock phone meeting every night back when we were both in junior high. He was one of my really good guy friends. I couldn't have asked for a better guy for my friend Jordan. He was truly one of a kind. I'm so lucky to have had in my life. I've been praying and checking this blog it felt like a million times a day and continued to pray. I pray that God is with your family at this time.

  87. Never think that our acts of obedience before the Lord---in the way we raise our children, in the way that we treat and encourage others, in the way that we live our lives as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ---don't impact the lives of others around us. The events of the past week or so have impacted many, perhaps thousands, not just because of the circumstances but more because of who Coleman is and who his family is. We are strangers---we don't personally know Coleman or his family personally, but, it is obvious that Coleman was an outstanding young man raised in an outstanding family who thought beyond all the "stuff" of our culture. God has used this family and the life of Coleman to inspire others to look to the Lord in a very difficult and painful time in their lives. You have inspired us! 91. Belinda, you honestly are one of the most caring and thoughtful people I have ever met. Whenever Coleman would do or say something very thoughtful and sweet I knew he learned it from you. Everytime I talk to you, you always have something wise to say and I know everything you say comes from your heart. You are an amazing mother who has raised two wonderful sons, one of which I fell deeply in love with, and are still raising two beautiful daughters. I love you.

Eric, everytime Coleman and I started talking about our parents, when he talked of you he would say something along the lines of, when I was younger I didn't understand why my dad said the things he said but now I do, he was right...I'm sure he would never want me to admit that to you, but it's true. He talked about you with so much respect and I know he hoped to be like you.

Coleman, you are everything I could have ever hoped for. You made me laugh and taught me to not stress the small stuff. You filled up part of me and completed me...It's so hard to say goodbye, so I'm not going to, I'm going to say see you later. When I finally do see you later it will be in a place far greater than this earth. You were truely a blessing from God Himself in my life, my angel. You will forever have my heart and I will miss you greatly. I love you more than I could ever explain to anyone except for you because, you know exactly how I feel. I hope that it too can help with your healing. I met Coleman at work, when he first arrived to Germany. he presented himself as a respectful man, though young, and eager to do his duty as a Soldier. Likewise, there is no tragedy that could befall us which could inflict greater agony than the loss of one of our children. But Father, as we celebrate this season of the birth of Your only begotten Son, comfort us all with the knowledge that You have shared the pain that Eric & Belinda now are enduring. Please give Eric & Belinda, and the entire Hinkefent family the ceretain sense that You are there, grieving with them. You willingly sacrificed your Son, so that mankind might have the hope of living eternally with You in perfect peace, with no more tears, suffering, or sorrow. We know that Coleman had placed his faith in Your son and that he now resides eternally with You. 98. Belinda and Eric, My heart aches for you and your dear family and for Jordan, but it rejoices in knowing that Coleman has accomplished that which we as Christians all strive for - eternal life in Jesus Christ. As much as we as parents love our children, it's difficult to comprehend that God loves His children so much more. He assures us that all things work together for the good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.(Romans 8:28) I thank Coleman for his service to a country he loved, but mostly for his service to our Lord. You have so much to be proud of! Coleman reached so many lives all over the world for the cause of Christ. Thank you for sharing his testimony with us - it has been such a blessing. Please know that we love you all and will keep you in our prayers.

  99. I do not know your family and I did not have the pleasure of knowing Coleman, but I grieve with you. I have been reading your blogs for a couple of weeks and I checked them regularly throughout the day, praying that God would even just send a crumb of a miracle and he sent many crumbs... and it's so hard to understand why healing on this earth was not in God's will. You as a father have been an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your son with us

  101. As I sit here, heartbroken, I can't express my sorrow for you. I don't know if I could have had the faith, Eric and Belinda, that you have had. Please know that I am praying for you. My 16 yr old son wants to also serve our country as Coleman did. Being a military brat, I am aware of the dangers, but I am proud that he wants to do this. Remember, this is what Coleman wanted to do. We are SOOO proud of him.

Jordan, I know you feel you will never get through this, know that Coleman will always be with you and he wants you to move on, live a wonderful life, and love again. Your parents love you more deeply than you know. Use them and the Lord to help you grieve.

Debbie, all I can say, is I love you and am here if you need me.

Coleman, you have touched more lives than you know. I know that the Lord has you at his side and look forward to meeting you when we are all called home.

    God bless all of you.

  102. Wow, there is no greater offering to God than a family utterly dependent upon HIM. He has been your source of strength and continues to be so. You have allowed your suffering to be a bright and shining light reaching into a dark world. May we never forget what we have learned this last week. May we not be discouraged by our sadness. Coleman is now praising God in His very presense. Oh the Joy that he has now. Father, help us to remember that while we are here to cling to you with every breath we breath and know that You have a purpose for each of us.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Heb 12:1

  104. My sister passed away this pas January. It was very hard on me considering she was only 45. So I know what Coleman's siblings are going through. It is hard. Probably the hardest thing that I have ever went through. But the love of God will get you through. I promise. The funeral home gave us this beautiful poem a few days ago. It helped me a lot since this will be the first Christmas without my sister. I hope that it brings you comfort as well. Who knows, maybe Susan and Coleman have already met.

    Christmas In Heaven

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below,
With tiny lights, like heaven's stars, reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear,
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear,
The sounds of music can't compare with the Christmas choir here.
I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring,
For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart,
But I am not so far away. We really aren't apart.
So be happy for me dear ones. You know I hold you dear,
And be glad I'm spending Christmas, with Jesus Christ this year.

I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above.
I send you each a memory of my undying love.
After all, Love is the Gift more precious than pure gold.
It was always most important in the stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do,
For I can't count the blessings or love He has for each of you.
So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear.
Remember, I'm spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

  107. 13,240 visitors to this blog in just about 10 days.

13,240 people who have read of the glory of God and of His faithfulness and His provision for salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.

What greater honor could any of us be given by God than to have our lives and our passings bring glory to His Name?

Coleman did that. You've done that. Your family and friends have done that.

What an amazing tribute to our Lord, and to Coleman.

I love this passage of Scripture...it inspires me to stand firm, as Coleman did. :)

We'll see you soon, little buddy. Thanks for all the smiles and belly laughs you gave to so many!

2 Timothy 4:6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.

I am devastated and can only imagine the pain for parents, fiancee and siblings. My husband and I continue to pray for Coleman's family and Jordan's family. Isn't it amazing how many people and how many cities were touched by Coleman's struggle!

God does know best. We may NEVER understand. But that really is OK. I believe we'll understand a lot more later on.

  114. Eric, Belinda, and Family,
We are so sorry to hear about Coleman and can only imagine your pain. The most comforting thing I can think of at this time is John 11:25 and 26 Jesus said, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die!!! Then in John 14:1-3.
Jesus said,"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
    And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself;
that where I am, there ye may be also.
Coleman is in Heaven smiling with that big beautiful smile and spreading God's love around
as only he could do. We will miss him, but heaven has embraced him. Jesus said in John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
I call on the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to give you supernatural comfort in this, your time of grief. And Lord we thank you for it in Jesus name.

  138. Eric & Belinda,
I've struggled the last few days trying to find the right words to help comfort you both, Jordan, Emil, Heather and the girls, words fail me now, but my prayers for you all continue.
I keep thinking back to the time that Coleman wanted to talk with Mike and I and ask our permission to marry Jordan. I had known about it in advance of Mike, because Coleman had called me to ask how he was to go about it and how to approach Mike, and if I could help him with some advise. I then told him just to speak from his heart how he felt about Jordan and it couldn't go wrong. I believe that Eric, you encouraged him to come alone without Jordan as a back-up. Coleman was so nervous he bounced from the sofa to the chair so many times I thought I would get whiplash, but once he started to talk about his love for Jordan there was no holding him back, if I had had any doubts, Coleman washed them all away by his sincerity and his true love for Jordan. Our family has truly been blessed for having known and loved Coleman.

The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
    Nahum 1:7

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee.

  155. To all those that love Coleman, especially Eric and Belinda, I am at a loss for words. I can tell you there are actually no words that I or anyone else can say to ease the incredible pain you are experiencing. We are here if you need someone to talk. My number is 918-760-3530 call at any time, day or night. Please do not hesitate. I don't get on the computer very much any more. Just to check MySpace to see if any of Cody's friends or Army buddies have left comments or pics of him. Or to send words of encouragement to the brave men (I don't know any women but I tell the guys to pass on my words) to keep thier heads up and that we love them and pray daily for them. Without them we wouldn't be able to sit and read blogs and as Coleman says: "So we can sleep in peace tonite". Coleman had been so heavy in my thoughts and prayers the last two weeks and I didn't even know why but I specially requested that Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Saviour bless him and keep him safe. I was devasted when I learned of his passing and was so very angry with myself for not commenting his MySpace to tell him how much we loved him and were praying for him. Rest assured that Our Lord is gathering an Elite Army, the best of the best, and we know that our sons, PFC Coleman Hinkefent and PFC Cody Carver, are front and center. Because of Cody's passing my husband & I have grown so much closer to God. God knows and understands our pain because after all he has been in our shows. He gave his only son so that we may have everlasting lives. We gave our sons to protect our mortal lives and they have gone on to help prepare for our arrival. Our sons were so very much alike and I am sure that is why they were such great friends. They both touched others lives in such a profound way. Those who came in contact with them were forever changed. We gladly stand next to you in the pride we feel for our sons. I am so very proud of Coleman. I know Cody is proud of him and I know Cody was the first in line to greet him as he marched through the Gates of Pearl and I'm sure they were thrilled to see one another. And I'm sure Tasha was there as well. They are rejoicing with the Father. May God bless you and wrap you in his loving arms and comfort you through the coming day, months and years. Our deepest sympathy and tons of love, The Carvers--Darrel, Pam and Jake, Proud parents of a Army Infantryman, PFC Cody M. Carver

  156. I have been wanting to post something ever since this all began but never knew the right words to say. All I can say now is I am so sorry, and you continue to be in my thoughts and prayers, especially as the holidays truly begin. My husband is CPT Johnathan Martin who came to see you in Homburg on more than one occasion during Coleman's struggle. We speak of you and Coleman every day and wish that there had been more we could have done to comfort you while you were here. May you have the strength to celebrate Coleman's life, to remember your fondest memories, and to let him live through you forever. I'm so sorry for your loss.

  158. I didn't know your son in any other way than the words posted here on this blog. My brother is enlisted in the marines so I know what it's like to have the pride of a soldier in the family. May you all be blessed in this time. Let's not feel sorry for Coleman, but rather for ourselves. We are the ones here, and he is the one who is praising our saviour face to face. Nevertheless we are praying for all of you. God bless!!

  162. Also, my friend put this on a bulletin for Coleman even though she didn't know him. It's very sweet.

    My First Christmas In Heaven:

"I see the countless Christmas trees
    around the world below,
With tiny lights, like Heaven's stars,
    reflecting on the snow.

The sign is so spectacular, please
    wipe away the tear.

    For i am spending Christmas
    with Jesus Christ this year.

I hear the may CHristmas songs
    that people hold so dear,
But the sounds of music can't compare
with the Christmas choir up here.

I have no words to tell you,
    the joy their voices bring.

    For it is beyond description,
    to hear the angels sing.

I know how much you miss me,
I see the pain inside your hearts,
But i am not so far away,
    we really aren't apart.

So be happy for me dear ones,
you know i hold you dear.

And be glad I'm spending Christmas
    with Jesus Christ this year.

I sent you each a special gift,
    from my Heavenly home aove,
I sent you each a memory
    of my undying love.

After all, love is a gift more
    precious than pure gold,
    it was always more important
    in the stories Jesus told.

Please love and keep each other
as my Father said to do,
For i can't count the blessings
or love, He has for each of you.

    So have a Merry Christmas
    and wipe away that tear,
    Remember, I am spending Christmas
    with Jesus Christ this year."

  166. Dear family of Coleman, Jordan and all of his friends,

I did not have the honor of knowing Coleman. I certainly wish that I had. Reading all the comments about him helped me to feel that I knew him. His parents have to be so proud of such a fine son.

I found out about Coleman from another blog and have had him on my mind and in my prayers ever since.

Words cannot express how sorry I am that you have temporarily lost the privilege of being with Coleman. While you cried at his bedside he was hearing the angels sing and looking in His Savior's eyes and hearing Him say, "Well done my good and faithful servant." Christ then welcomed Coleman into His arms.

Father God please hold the family, fiance and friends of Coleman's tightly in the palm of your hand as they grieve, yet celebrate this amazing young man. Please allow them to feel all of our prayers and love. Please allow them your peace that passes all understanding.

Please show them your tender mercies as they deal with this unbelieveable loss.

I praise and thank You for Coleman, for his testimony to You, for his joy and kindnesses to friends and those he knew. I thank you for all those who prayed for him.

I thank you for his family, fiance and friends who love him so dearly and are having a difficult time imagining their lives without Coleman in them.

I also thank you for his willingness to serve his country. I pray for all his brothers and sisters in the military.

    In Jesus precious name, amen.

It will be an honor to meet Coleman in Heaven. I think I will know him by his smile.
God bless you all. Kathy (Michigan)

  171. It's a new year...a new way of living. Not only for those of us who knew and loved Coleman. But, also for those who didn't know him until now. My eyes fill with tears for myself as I know I will only hear his laugh in my heart, see his smile in my mind and remember the twinkle in those beautiful eyes. I believe everyone who was touched by him will be better for it. And may all of us, both the believers and those who hesitate, develop a stronger, deeper, more lasting faith as Coleman so actively showed us...every day.

Tons of love and loads of prayers are continually sent to the family for daily strength. -Debra-

My name is SPC William Fraleigh i was stationed with Coleman when he first came to Baumholder Germany, Coleman was not like most of the "new" soldiers, Coleman was always in a good mood and was always willing to help and learn, upon arriving in Germany we gave him the nick-name of foot because of his huge feet and small frame, I'm now afraid the world has lost a great person. Coleman no-one will ever be able to fill your shoes!! I'm glad i got the chance to meet you! my deepest regrets go to his family, fiance, and friends!! you will be dearly missed!

  187. The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Pfc. Coleman Hinkefent our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Coleman. And to Coleman it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while serving in the U.S. Army. Coleman, we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Coleman’s family and loved ones.

  188. Every death brings sorrow to those who are left behind; each soldier who wears the uniform of his or her country, with honor and courage, is a hero and I can see that this fine young man fought an insidious enemy with great courage and determination. At such a sad time I can only hope that you are surrounded by love and comfort and that the days and weeks ahead give you peace and time with your memories of this very special young man - one whose time on earth, short as it was, meant so much to so many people. His joyful personality simply beams out of the photo and it isn't difficult to see his good nature and laughter too.You are secure in your faith, and you brought your son up in the same light - God Bless you all.

  198. My name is Bip Martin. I was Coleman's drama teacher when he attended Summit Christian Academy. I always enjoyed Coleman for who he was; he made me smile at the many unique things he would do in class and his sense of humor belonged only to him.
We often played a game in our class titled, "The Alphabet Conversation," and to this day, he holds the title of "The Best." There was no one that could even get close to being as good as he was in this game. He was fun and I enjoyed having him as a student.
The last time he paid a visit to Summit, he stopped by to see me and told me that he was going into the armed services. I looked at him and thought to myself,"He's just a boy. How can he do such a grown-up job?" But I wished him well. I'm glad for that visit; he made me feel honored.
Words will never be able to describe the loss of a child, no matter what their age. I, too, am a parent, and my heart is deeply touched by the fact that Coleman has now "changed his address" from earth to heaven. One day we'll all be together, and it will be forever, which is a very long time. And I will definitely challenge him to the "Alphabet Conversation" once again ... he always felt I was his most worthy opponent. ;-)
